Visitation was held from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Elbert (Mr. Elbert) was born in Oxford, Miss. on August 29, 1932. He graduated from Coffeeville High School and continued on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Mississippi State University. Elbert was married to Ann Armstrong on June 28, 1956; they were married for 34 years when she passed away in 1990. Elbert grew up in Coffeeville raising cotton, riding horses and working cattle and came to Como to farm in Tate and Panola Counties in 1954. While he continued to raise cattle until his death, he described himself as, "a cotton farmer". He was very active in the farming community in Tate and Panola Counties serving on the Board of Directors for the Tate County Co-Op, and the Tate and Panola County Gins. He was honored as both the Jaycee Young Farmer of the Year for Tate County in 1960 and Outstanding Tate County Farmer by the Senatobia Chamber of Commerce in 1975. He stopped crop farming in 1991 to devote his time to cattle farming which he continued until his death. In addition to farming, "Mr. Elbert" was in the horse business for more than a half century. A life-long member of the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) and the American Quarter Horse Association, he has raised, owned and ridden, as he would say, 'some pretty nice horses that did all right' over the years; however, many in the cutting horse industry often credit him with being among the first to bring top-flight 'cow horses' east of the Mississippi. Through the years he raised horses to work cattle at home more so than for the show ring with the major bloodlines from Poco Cottoneye (a son of Poco Bueno), his broodmare Baby Foot's sire; Bob Acre's Reward 'Cadillac', a Bob Acre Doc-bread stallion; and a number of Son of A Doc colts. Among the many horses he bread that were top show horses he also had two NCHA Futurity standouts. Doctor Como, out of his mare Baby Foot, who made the 1986 NCHA Futurity semifinals missing the finals by a half-point and Peponita's Acre was the 1996 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Champion Peponita's Acre horse he owned with his longtime friend Lee Garner. His love for cutting horses and commitment to advancing the sport lead him and Ann to include a detour to pick up one of his favorites on their honeymoon. You could always tell when Mr. Elbert was really fond of a horse, because if someone wanted to buy it he would always tell them that it belonged to "Miss Ann" and she just didn't want to let it go! "Mr. Elbert" not only raised, owned and rode great cutting horses, he served as a mentor to many in the industry. Among those were his brother-in-law Joe Armstrong of La Mesa, New Mexico and Lee Garner of Batesville. Lee Garner considered him a mentor in business as well as horse trading, "Even when I'm ready to sign a business contract, I'd call him; he was really shrewd. But when Elbert said he'd do something, you didn't need a contract; his word was his bond. He's one of my heroes." Elbert is survived by his daughters Bonnie Sides of Jackson, Elizabeth Ann Waddell of Little Rock Arkansas, Alice Sides McLeod of Como, and Shannon Adams of Senatobia; son-in-law Randy Waddell of Little Rock, grandchildren Sides and George McLeod of Como and Jackson and Olivia Waddell of Little Rock; brothers Chappell Sides and Don Sides of Coffeeville, brothers-in-law Joe Armstrong of La Mesa, New Mexico, G.W. Armstrong, III. of Coffeeville, and Ralph Armstrong of Duck Hill, and various nieces and nephews including Eva Sides Richardson of Dallas, Texas and Josh Armstrong of La Mesa, New Mexico. Elbert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann Armstrong Sides and his parents J.C. Sides, Sr. and Eva Caldwell Sides. Active Pallbearers include Jim Bost, Matthew Cushman, Tommy Dickerson, Will Hancock, Stan Holcomb, Mark Lipscomb, Eddie Reynolds, Mark Rhodes, and Donnie Smith.
