Sheriff uneasy with new law

Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance is concerned about the potential effects of House Bill 585, a new law that is intended to save the state a substantial amount of money in prison costs.

House Bill 585 has “raised the threshold on a felony,” according to Lance, aiming to put more violent criminals behind bars, and give those who have committed what are considered lesser crimes a second chance.

Lance said his concern comes with the change in property crime penalties, as well as the potential of a collapse of the state’s inmate work program.
